Dollard-des-Ormeaux: a bilingual business community
Dollard-des-Ormeaux is one of the West Island's main hubs. Its economy rests on professional services, health care, retail, restaurants, real estate and family entrepreneurship often rooted in immigration. It is also one of Quebec's most anglophone business communities.
That reality raises a question West Island entrepreneurs ask almost systematically: how to reconcile a business operating in English with Quebec's language rules.
Corporate names, in practice
A corporation formed in Quebec must have a French corporate name. That principle carries important nuances: a trademark, a family name or a term with no French equivalent can be used, and an English version of the name can serve outside Quebec.
In practice, most West Island businesses find wording that respects the rule without distorting their brand. We validate this before filing, which avoids a rejection by the Registraire and a restart of the file.
- A separate legal person protecting your personal assets
- A reduced tax rate on the first $500,000 of eligible active business income
- A corporate name validated before filing
- Service available in English and French

Provincial or federal when you operate in English?
Federal incorporation allows a bilingual or English corporate name, which appeals to some entrepreneurs. However, a federal corporation carrying on business in Quebec must register with the Registraire des entreprises and comply with applicable Quebec rules on signage and commercial communications.
In other words, incorporating federally does not exempt you from Quebec language obligations in your operations. The choice of regime should therefore rest on business criteria, not on hoping to avoid a rule.
Structuring a family business
Many businesses in the area are family-run, with several members involved without formal roles. A shareholders agreement defines who owns what, who decides, and what happens on departure, death or disagreement. It is the document that keeps a family conflict from becoming a business conflict.
Your obligations once incorporated
Annual updating declaration, a current minute book, a separate corporate tax return and resolutions recording major decisions.
Common questions from Dollard-des-Ormeaux entrepreneurs
Can I use an English name? The corporate name must be in French, with exceptions notably for trademarks. An English version can be used outside Quebec.
