La Pêche: between park, villages and the capital
La Pêche brings together several rural Outaouais sectors, including Wakefield, near Gatineau Park and a short distance from the Ottawa-Gatineau region. Tourism, accommodation, restaurants, construction, trades and professional services coexist there.
An interprovincial clientele every day
Many La Pêche businesses naturally serve Ontario clients. The rule to know is simple but often misunderstood.
You do not have to register in Ontario merely because you have clients there. Taking orders, selling by mail or advertising, or sending an occasional representative does not, in itself, amount to carrying on business in the province. Maintaining an office, a warehouse, a resident agent or holding an interest in real property does trigger extra-provincial registration.
Fines for default can reach $2,000 for an individual and $25,000 for a corporation. Since February 2025, a Company Key is also required for several online filings in Ontario.

Provincial or federal for a La Pêche business?
If your physical presence stays in Quebec, the provincial regime is enough, even with Ontario clients. Federal becomes interesting if you plan to open a service point in Ontario or protect your name in both provinces.
Nature tourism and its risks
Accommodation, outdoor activities, equipment rental: these services create liability toward visitors. Insurance suited to recreational activities, distinct from a general commercial policy, is generally necessary.
Your obligations once incorporated
Annual updating declaration, a current minute book, a separate corporate tax return and resolutions recording major decisions.
Common questions from La Pêche entrepreneurs
I mostly bill Ottawa clients. Is that a problem? No, as long as your operation stays in Quebec. Billing alone does not create an Ontario registration obligation.
