Longueuil: aerospace, industry and business services
The Longueuil agglomeration hosts one of Canada's largest aerospace clusters, including the Canadian Space Agency and a dense supply chain of specialized subcontractors. Around it sit manufacturers, engineering firms, machine shops, carriers and a wide range of business services.
In this ecosystem, entrepreneurs do not sell to consumers first. They sell to other companies, usually much larger than they are. That reality brings specific requirements.
What prime contractors ask for
A major manufacturer, an aerospace integrator or a construction general contractor will almost always require from suppliers: an incorporated entity, liability insurance in the business name, a Quebec enterprise number, separate financial statements and sometimes quality certifications. A sole proprietorship often stalls at the first step of supplier qualification.
Then there is risk. Industrial subcontracting agreements include liability clauses, late penalties and compliance requirements. Without a corporation, your personal assets carry that exposure.
- A separate legal person that absorbs contractual liability
- Eligibility for large buyers' supplier qualification processes
- A reduced tax rate on the first $500,000 of eligible active business income
- Borrowing and equipment financing in the company's name

Provincial or federal for a Longueuil business?
If your clients are mostly in Quebec, the provincial regime is enough and cheaper to maintain. Federal incorporation deserves consideration if you supply clients in several provinces, export to the United States, or want Canada-wide name protection. A federal corporation must still register with Quebec's Registraire des entreprises.
Financing equipment and hiring
Industrial subcontracting often requires investment in machinery, tooling or premises. A corporation makes financing easier: the lender lends to the business, with its own financial statements, rather than to an individual. It also simplifies hiring, group insurance and, eventually, selling or transferring the business.
Your obligations after incorporating
Annual updating declaration, a current minute book, a separate corporate tax return and resolutions for major decisions. A prime contractor running a supplier audit may ask to see these documents.
Common questions from Longueuil entrepreneurs
My main client requires that I be incorporated. How long does it take? The questionnaire takes about 15 minutes and the file moves quickly after review.
Can I keep my sole proprietorship in parallel? Possible, but rarely advisable. Better to move operations into the corporation with tax guidance.
