Saint-Jérôme: between growing suburb and Laurentians economy
Saint-Jérôme is the tipping point between Montréal's north shore and the Laurentians. The city combines sustained residential growth, a manufacturing sector, health and education services, and immediate proximity to one of Quebec's main recreational tourism areas.
That produces a distinctive business profile: construction and renovation, landscaping, property maintenance, transport, specialty retail, tourism and services to seasonal residents. Many of these activities are seasonal or strongly cyclical.
Seasonality makes structure more important, not less
A seasonal business earns much of its revenue over a few months. That is exactly where a corporation delivers a concrete advantage: you leave profits in the company, taxed at small-business rates, and pay yourself income spread across the year rather than taking everything personally at the peak of the season.
Then there is protection. Work at client properties, heavy equipment, seasonal employees, snow removal or renovation contracts: each carries claim risk. As a sole proprietor, that risk targets your personal property.
- A separate legal person absorbing liability
- A reduced tax rate on the first $500,000 of eligible active business income
- The ability to smooth your personal income despite a concentrated season
- Greater credibility with general contractors and commercial clients

Provincial or federal for a Saint-Jérôme business?
A construction, service or tourism business working across the Laurentians and Greater Montréal has no reason to incorporate federally. The provincial regime is simpler and cheaper. Federal makes sense mainly if you plan to work in another province.
Incorporating does not replace your permits
In construction and tourism, several authorizations still apply: Régie du bâtiment licence, municipal permits, certifications, insurance, tourist accommodation obligations. These generally have to be held in the corporation's name after the transition, a step to plan rather than discover.
Your obligations once incorporated
Annual updating declaration, a current minute book, a separate corporate tax return and resolutions for major decisions. A general contractor or a lender may ask to see these documents.
Common questions from Saint-Jérôme entrepreneurs
My business only operates six months a year. Is it worth it? Often yes, precisely because of concentrated revenue and the ability to defer personal tax.
I have seasonal employees. Is it simpler in a corporation? The structure does not change your employer obligations, but it clarifies who the employer is and limits your personal exposure.
